A lot of my clients ask me a simple question: what is the ONE thing I can do right now that would move me forward the most?
My answer might surprise you. But here it is…
The fastest way to move forward is to STOP.
Now, let me explain what I mean by that! I don’t mean quitting, or giving up on your dream. I mean to STOP when you feel out of alignment.
Then, take a deep breath. Connect with what IS in the moment. As soon as you can, shift your focus to what brings you JOY. Then do more of that!
This space–when you’re feeling joyful, aligned, and you lose track of time for the love of what you’re doing–is called your Zone of Genius.
You might’ve heard the term “Zone of Genius,” especially if you’re a fan of the book “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks. This book made a big impact on my life, and it introduced me to living in the space where everything flows with ease.
So what exactly IS this Zone of Genius, and how do you get there?
Your Zone of Genius is the space where you’re doing what you were meant to do. It not only gets you into “the flow” but it also sets you up to receive magic in your life.
When you’re in your Zone of Genius, opportunities fall into your lap. Solutions show up without your having to try. You drop the struggle and actually do what you love–and the magic follows!
EVERYONE has a zone of genius. It’s already there waiting for you. All you need to do is recognize it, and take the steps to get there!
Sounds amazing, right? So how do you actually get there? Read on and I’ll show you 5 practical steps to move into your magical Zone of Genius, and shift your energy to your ultimate passion and purpose!
About three years ago I started to look at what I was doing in all areas of my life, especially in my business. Back then I felt like I was doing OK in business and life, but not great. Something was missing, and I didn’t know what.
I felt like I needed to be more efficient in my business. But I also knew that just another business strategy would only do so much for me. I had to go at it another way.
So with the ideas behind “The Big Leap” in mind, I decided to take an honest look at how I spent my day. But I needed to look at not only how I spent my time, but also how I spent my energy.
Here’s what I found…
With some of the things I did in my business, I completely dreaded doing them. Other things in my business were tasks that I was good at, but didn’t really love to do.
THEN…there were the things that truly lit me up. The tasks in which the time would FLY by for me. I’d never look at my phone or the clock, because I was so busy loving what I was doing. The classes I taught, the healing sessions I facilitated…I could do those things effortlessly for hours.
These things, I discovered, were my true Zone of Genius. I knew from then on that for best results in business and life, I needed to put most of my energy into the things I did the best.
Now, I didn’t do it all overnight. I didn’t spend a lot of money right away, hire a team, and let go of everything in my business that wasn’t “Genius” tasks. But I did start taking steps to phase out the tasks that took my energy away from my truest passions.
It took time. It took patience. But now I am living most of my life in my Zone of Genius, and my business and life have gone to new heights!
Now, let’s talk about how you can find your own Zone of Genius, and make a plan to start living there, no matter where you are right now! (Because believe it or not, you CAN take the first step today!)
It comes down to breaking down what you seriously don’t like doing, what you’re just good at, and what you LOVE to do.
For example, there are things that I do very well. I’m good with computers and technology. I can create plans and structure programs. I can visualize how I’d want my bandana or the images to look on my website, create graphics, and make awesome workbooks for my clients.
I do all these things well, but they’re not my Zone of Genius. These things are my Zone of Excellence. Your Zone of Excellence holds the things that you do well, but you might not necessarily love to do.
Then, you have that third zone, the space that I call the zone of “run away screaming.” THIS means the tasks that not only you aren’t good at, but that you can’t stand doing. (I bet you can think of a few things in your life that go on that list right away!)
The key is to start delegating the tasks that you can’t stand first. Then slowly delegate the tasks that you’re simply good at but don’t love. Finally, shifting your energy to the tasks that truly light you up!
Now, you may thinking that this sounds like a good idea, but how will you make it happen? What if you’re new to business, and you don’t have the money to hire a team just yet?
Here’s the good news. Even if you don’t have a lot of money to spend (or none at all), you can still start calling people into your life to support your vision.
When I first began my business journey, I of course wasn’t making much money. I had a one-year-old daughter. I was trying to keep up with all the things that a startup needs to do. Little money, even less time.
So what did I do first?
I knew my biggest struggle was writing, especially with English being my second language. So I hired someone for a few hours each month to support me.
She helped me get my written message into the world a lot faster than I could’ve done on my own. She also made it possible for me to turn my time and energy toward the things that I wanted to focus on in my business.
This was a simple–and relatively inexpensive–way for me to start shifting my energy toward what I truly loved to do. Just paying someone a few hours a month changed the course of my business!
Now, let’s ask the biggest question of all. How do you figure out all these “Zones” in your business, and how do you apply these ideas in a practical way?
Let me share a powerful exercise to determine your Zone of Genius, Zone of Excellence, and Zone of “Run Away Screaming.” And then make a plan to shift your focus to the Genius.
Ready? Grab a pen and paper, or your favorite journal. Then follow these steps.
1) Step 1: Write down EVERYTHING that you do during the day. Include everything that you do for yourself, for others, and for your business. Write it all down, then take a look at what’s on the page.
2) Step 2: Sort out all your tasks into the “Zones.” Which tasks do you really not want to do, which do you do well, and which make you feel truly alive and aligned? Mark each one as either a “Run Away,” “Excellence,” or “Genius” task.
Get real about it. If you’re good at something but you don’t love it, don’t mark that as a “Genius” item. If you can’t stand doing something, don’t feel like you have to call it “Excellence.” Call it “Run Away” if you need to! Then, give special attention to the “Genius” tasks. You’ll be using this part in Step 5!
Be honest about how you feel on EVERYTHING. Then review your list, and start making a plan.
3) Step 3: Get support on the “Run Away” tasks first. How can you open up your energy to call the right person into your life to help you? Set your intention, open up your energy, and get the support you need to get those tasks off your list first. You might find that it’s hiring someone, or enlisting the help of a family member or a friend. Stay open to ALL possibilities, and take action on the guidance that you receive.
4) Step 4: Slowly Phase out Zone of Excellence tasks. Which tasks do you like well enough to keep doing (for now), and which ones could you possibly delegate? Do the best you can to transition your energy out of your Zone of Excellence, one step at a time. This might take some time, but start looking for support on the things that are “just OK” to you, so you can free up more time for your true love tasks.
5) Step 5: Prioritize your Zone of Genius. Look at the things on your list that represent your true Zone of Genius. Pay special attention to these tasks or activities, and do something very important–put them FIRST in your day!
That is, before you do anything else, take the time to focus on your Zone of Genius. Make it a priority, even if it’s only a few minutes every morning.
This is the best way to start shifting your focus and your energy to your true Zone of Genius. Make it a priority EVERY day, just a little bit at a time. The more you do this, the more the Universe will step up to support you, one step at a time.
Before you know it, you’ll be operating full-time in your Zone of Genius!
So get your least favorite tasks off your list with the right support. Shift one step at a time out of your Zone of Excellence, delegating those tasks away as much as you can (or want to).
Most of all–start your day by focusing on your Zone of Genius! Do this first, and the rest will gradually fall into place for you. This is when you’ll start seeing more clients, more sales, more money, and more inspiration!
Now, tell me, what is YOUR Zone of Genius? What is the thing (or things) that you love doing more than anything else, and how are you going to prioritize them in your life?
Leave me a comment, share your Zone of Genius, and start moving closer to making it your full-time job!
