The take-away is already in the title: brand yourself, not what you do. This applies whether you have a business or are thinking about starting a business.

If you have a business, and things aren’t going as well as you would like, this refocusing away from what you do to who you are may be the key. Not just to business, but to your overall satisfaction in life.

What Happens When You Not Branding Yourself?

In Los Angeles, I heard some branding and marketing people speak recently. As I listened, I noticed that some of them were definitely “experts” in their field, but their message was missing the mark with a majority of the audience.

Granted, they were sharing a lot of really great content and advice on “skills” and “tools” but it just wasn’t landing as they might have hoped. I think there’s a simple explanation for this, one which helped me tremendously: when we achieve mastery in our respective fields, we forget what it was like to be novices ourselves.

So, when we are talking to people who are on a learning curve, either in webinar, or on stage, or even one-to-one in our coaching businesses, we can sometimes speak from too high of a level, forgetting to imagine the conversation from their point-of-view.

True Success is Branding Yourself, Not What You Do

This happens a lot in a college setting, where just because the professor has a PhD from an Ivy-league school, it doesn’t automatically mean he or she can teach. In fact, it is often those who are most advanced — the brilliant geniuses — who have the hardest time connecting with those who can’t quite see the world as they do (yet).

It’s not that the marketer or the professor doesn’t have “skills” and “tools” to share; it’s more that the connection between them and their audience isn’t at full strength. The reason for this: they are branding what they do, not who they are.

So, how does one brand who they are?

From an Akashic standpoint:

  1. Discover or connect with your passion, or, as I like to call it, “the thing you would go to the end of the world to fight for.”
  2. Be clear about the kind of energy you want to portray. Many Akashic Records practitioners dress in black, which projects seriousness and a heavy air. I knew that wearing all black was not my cup of tea and that, being from Brazil, it was more “me” to wear bright colors and engage with people in a vibrant and spontaneous way.
  3. Know your gifts. The gifts you came into this life with, and the gifts you’ve picked up along the way.

When your passion, energy, and gifts are clear, you operate from a space of powerful personal alignment.  Those are three very big topics. So for today, I want to leave you with a few thoughts on what I mean by passion. From my heart to yours, passion is an expression of purpose, and I believe each person has a life purpose and a soul purpose.

Life purpose is “the thing you came here to do.” Your beautiful, amazing, wonderful thing that you can do. The transformation that you came here to deliver to other people.

Soul purpose, on the other hand, is the experience your soul wants you to have in this life. And your life purpose is the vehicle to increase the probability that your soul will experience what it wants, that it works through the lessons and joy it seeks.

Everybody has a soul purpose, which an Akashic reading can help you connect with. Knowing this purpose can be very scary (I’ve been there myself). It’s not scary in a horror movie kind of way. Far from it. It’s more that when you connect with what you are really here to do, it’s beautiful and powerful, and we can feel so very far away from it — like novices in a lecture way over our heads.

That feeling is perfectly natural. And healthy! To be honest about that feeling is to honor where you are, and will give yourself the space to learn and grow. And knowing  and owning your soul purpose helps you gain clarity on your life purpose, the vehicle of which can be your business.

Branding Yourself By Being You Everyday

So, in this light, your brand is the connecting all of your gifts with your passion, and making sure “the market” knows who you are, not just what you do. That all your activities, personal or business, doesn’t have to be anything more than a playful dance of your soul experiencing life by doing what it was meant to do.

You can then go “all in” all the time. A marketing plan? Don’t stress. Wear your unique colors in all situations in your life. Show up each day, in person, or in your email newsletters and such, as the person who can transform and impact people in the unique way that only you can do. Which means no matter how much of an expert you become, how many skills and tools and gifts you have, you have the passion to connect with each and every person attracted and magnetized by your special energy.
